Just a Guy with a Bible

Dear Reader,

I overheard a conversation this summer about a church’s budget. The main question seemed to be do we spend more money on sound systems and things like that versus more directly on missionaries or outreach. The pro-sound system person made the observation that these practical matters are necessary to outreach also. And then followed this with: “You can’t just have a guy up there with a Bible.” Ugh. Listen to the book of Hebrews: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). It is the Word of God, read from the Bible, preached by godly men guided by the Holy Spirit, that through the power of the Spirit is able to save souls. Sound systems are nice. Not every preacher has a voice that carries well. A church with heating in winter or air-conditioning in summer is nice. A pastor in our denomination is known to say that the ears can only absorb what the back end can endure. Meaning comfortable pews are nice. But none of these things is necessary. No video display or praise band or outreach program can be effective without the working of the Holy Spirit. When we clutter up our worship with all these things, we begin to think that they are necessary. And that if we want to see more conversions then we need to do more, we need to invent better programs. But it is not up to us. It is the work of God. All we need is some guy up there with a Bible.

Romans 10:13-17:

“Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!” However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
