How Will You Be As An Old Person?

Dear Reader,

I ran across this article which says that older Britons are not very happy. Now I do wonder if the same could be said for Americans. I think we are a people that love to laugh and be entertained so perhaps it is not so true for us. But we do also picture youth as a time for joking and laughing. Certainly, children seem to laugh many times a day.

A friend once told me that he thought that as people grew older, it became harder and harder for them to hide their true characters. I can certainly see examples of this in my own life. I have known both the stereotypical grouchy old lady (men too) who “speak their mind” and don’t seem to care or notice the effect upon others. I have also known some very gentle older people whose righteousness seems apparent to all.

I don’t know why this is. I am sure there ae exceptions. But perhaps as we grow older, we care less of the opinions of others and what we really think and are, whether good or bad, shines through more. And I would be careful of judging others on this criteria. When one is in pain, it is hard to show gentleness and kindness to those around. And unfortunately, as we age, we are more likely to have health problems in one way or another.

But I hope that when I an elderly, that I am one of those gentle, righteous people. I guess I better start working on that now though.
