More on Justice, also the Role of the Church

Dear Reader,

I posted recently on the need we have for justice (see here), the gist being that though it may be seriously warped by sin, there seems to be in all of us a sense of justice that needs to be satisfied. I see it most clearly in my friend whose husband left her and their kids. She would love to have a judge or someone in authority step in and tell her ex that he is wrong.

One of the saddest parts to me is that there is no one in their lives who will step up and do this. Her ex-husband’s parents do not support his behavior, but at the same time his family does not really seem to confront him about it, at least not in a productive way. And she is not involved in a church that would call him to account either. I can’t imagine my husband ever leaving me for another woman as this man did. But if he did, it is nice to know that there are men in our church who would confront him about it. Who would call a sin a sin. And there would be consequences. I have seen this with others in our denomination who have been first banned from the Lord’s Supper and later had their membership revoked. It is a very sad thing. Heart-breaking really. But to have these sorts of things go on with no consequences and no one willing to step up and speak up for what is right is even sadder.

It is not just a matter if justice or of punishment either. It is for the good of the one who is being disciplined as well. As an elder in our old church said, the goal or church discipline is restoration. I have also seen this happen and it is a wonderful thing. As it says in Luke 15:10, “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
