Books About Weird British Children

Dear Reader,

Have you ever noticed how some of the best books seem to be set in England in days of yore? I posted recently on some of our favorite read-alouds including the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (2 book available to date). And it made remember other similar books. What do these books have in common?

They are fun to read aloud.

The language is not dumbed down. There are often words I pause over.

They are set in England.

They are not set in the present day.

They are funny.

They are suspenseful.

The children have unique qualities or backgrounds (the Incorrigible children were raised by wolves).

We can’t wait to get back to them and wish there were more books in the series.

Besides the Incorrigibles, the other series that jumps to mind is the Solomon Snow books. Solomon is a foundling raised by poor parents who sets off on adventures to find his roots.

Another we loved is the Willoughbys by Lois Lowry. Many of her other books seem to be better known but we loved this one.

E. Nesbitt also has many wonderful books about British children. Though for most of them I would say they are relatively normal children who have weird adventures. We are currently reading Five Children add It and that is certainly true of that book.

Do you have other suggestions? I’d love to hear them.
