Indoor vs. Outdoor Kids

Dear Reader,

I had one more thought as a follow-up to my earlier post on getting my kids more time outside.

I was at a friend’s house and she was telling me how when they let their new cat become an outdoor cat, she lost a lot of weight. Now I know for cats that their lifespan is significantly shortened if they are outdoor cats (something like 5 years versus 15 for indoor cats). And we actually have 2 cats that stay indoors for this reason. But in the case of cats, the dangers are cars and larger animals.

So I was thinking, what about children? Sure there may be some dangers to being outside. But I think they are far outweighed by the benefits. Maybe not weight loss so much but general physical fitness from being more active instead of sitting in front of a screen. And more knowledge of God’s creation. And also more contentment I believe. I don’t think we were meant to be so cut off from nature. Now if I can just convince my kids that we need to be spending more time outside.

On the plus side, we have lots of sticks to pick up today after Hurricane Irene so that will keep us outside a bit.
