Phases of Learning

Dear Reader,

I wanted to share an idea I have picked up from an unschooling friend. It is about how children are programmed or ready to learn different things at different times. Her theory is that children go through phases in which they are learning one thing or another. So, for instance, your child might be really into math one month and then seem to lose interest and be really into history instead. She claims to have observed this in her own kids. I can’t say I have noticed it very dramatically in my own though they have certainly gone through periods when they are more interested in one particular subject. It is not usually something general like “history” or “science” but a particular interest like “ancient Greece” or “dinosaurs.” Knowing this pattern helps me to relax when one part of homeschool doesn’t seem to be advancing at the moment. It is just like having a kid that eats veggies one meal and meat the next; each individual meal may not be balanced but the overall diet is a balanced one.

As a Charlotte Mason educator (you didn’t think I’d get through a post without mentioning CM, did you?), I don’t just let one whole area drop because it is not the interest of the moment. But it is still helpful in terms of helping me not stress over hat they are learning and encouraging me to allow them to pursue their interest of the moment.
