Articles and Blogs

Dear Reader,

Once again here are some things I have been reading lately:

Psychology: Homeschool Offers a Viable Option for Many” by Scott Smith in The Capital Gazette— This is a wonderful, encouraging article on the psychological benefits of homeschooling. I think a lot of it are things that we homeschoolers already knew, but it is nice to read it all in one place.

Feeling Their Feet and Small Things” by Nancy at Sage Parnassus– Charlotte Mason tells us children do their own learning; we can’t force it upon them. This article helps us understand why we must let them do so. Also is addresses motivating children through grades or prizes, a subject I have been dwelling on lately.

How *Not* to be a ‘Mere Crammer’ in Science/Nature Study” from Living Charlotte Mason in California–This article explains why we need to lecture our kids less when it comes to science or nature study, even to the point of letting them be wrong sometimes. Have you ever heard  a homeschool mom enthusiastically draw her children’s attention to a mushroom and then proceed to use it as an opportunity to throw facts at them? Have you ever been that mom?

“Risky Homeschooling or Playing It Safe?” from the Thinking Mother– Especially as children get older, do you try to conform to a more traditional school model with traditional subjects? Or do you allow your child to pursue their interests?

Happy Reading!
